「The Road Remembers Their Bodies」シリーズは、私が幼少の頃可愛がっていた黒猫が道路の上で車に轢かれて死んだ出来事をモチーフとした、アスファルト製の彫刻作品です。
（タイトルは直訳すると「道路は彼らの身体を覚えている」となりますが、猫をモチーフにしたものに関しては日本語では「轢かれた猫はアスファルトに受肉する」というタイトルで発表していることもあります。）

別のシリーズ作品（Lost Landscapes series）を作るためにアスファルトを混ぜているとき、ふと私は昔可愛がっていた黒猫のことを思い出しました。
私が生まれ育った小さな村に一つだけあった車通りの多い道路では、よく動物が轢かれて死んでおり、私が子供の頃に餌付けして可愛がっていた黒猫も、その子供たちも、みんな最後はその道路で車に轢かれて死にました。そして、もし路上で轢かれて失われた動物の命が道路に宿った記憶により、アスファルトの身体を得て再び蘇ったとしたら、彼らはこの社会をどのように見るだろうかと考えました。
保護猫活動に尽力する人々のおかげで、昔に比べると車に轢かれて死ぬ猫も減ってきているように思いますが、今でも年に何度か轢かれて死んでしまった猫を目にします。外で自由に生きることと、家の中で安全に生きることの、どちらの方が猫にとって幸せなのかは分かりませんが、少なくとも車に轢かれることを望んで死んだ猫はいないでしょう。
このシリーズでは、そうした不幸な猫や動物が減ることを願って、作品の売り上げの一部を動物の保護活動に寄付することをコンセプトに加えています。

In the small seaside village where I grew up, there was only one heavily trafficked road. Animals were often killed there by passing cars. The black cat I cared for as a child — and eventually her kittens as well — all died on that same road.
While working with asphalt for Lost Landscapes Series, I began to think about those cats again. I imagined the asphalt itself retaining fragments of their presence, as though the road had absorbed memories of the bodies left upon it.
Today, thanks to the efforts of rescue organizations and volunteers, fewer cats may die this way than in the past. Yet stray animals continue to exist throughout Japan, and I still encounter bodies left at the roadside several times each year. I do not know whether freedom outdoors or safety indoors offers animals a better life. But surely none wished to end beneath the wheels of a car.
Part of the sales from The Road Remembers Their Bodies series will be donated to animal rescue organizations, with the hope that fewer animals will die unnoticed on the road.
