English sentence is below. These are my works in the Lost Landscapes series. In this work, I have painted buildings that have been demolished and turned into parking lots with white line paint on a screen made of asphalt. Some people may have the impression that the Japanese value old things, but the Japanese only value old things that are over 100 years old and generally recognized as having value. Many Japanese people like new things and demolish buildings as soon as they become a little old. In Japan, where the number of empty houses is a particular problem due to the declining birthrate and aging population, many empty houses were demolished and replaced with parking lots when laws against empty houses were tightened in 2015. As buildings were demolished one after another and replaced with parking lots, many beautiful townscapes were lost. Many people cannot recall what buildings were erected in the parking lots. I have been researching such parking lots, and have created this series by drawing pictures of the buildings that were available before they were demolished. The works displayed here get older as you scroll down and newer as you go up. Additionally, the pieces following 'Three buildings that once stood above the parking lot' not only portray the lost landscape with white line paint on asphalt but also outline the shape of the site that became a parking lot. Reflective paint is used to draw the lines dividing the parking lot, making it visible when illuminated. |
