　雨が漏り、菌糸が蔓延り、虫が巣喰い、木部は分解され、土壁は崩れ、やがて全てが土に還っていく。
家が空き家となり、雨漏りが起きて家が崩れていく様子は否定的に捉えられがちですが、見方や捉え方を変えて見ると、そこには沢山の美しい現象が満ちています。
　これから先、人口は更に減少していき、空き家は益々増えていくでしょう。それと同時に空き家を活用する人々やアイデアも増えていくでしょうが、それでも全ての空き家を活用できるわけではありません。空き家問題は厄介です。取り壊すのにも瓦礫を処分するのにもかなりのお金がかかります。更地にすれば街の景観が損なわれ、かといって無闇に放置してへたな崩れ方をしてしまったら周囲に被害を出してしまいます。ただ、それらが問題とされているのは、あくまで人間の視点から見た場合のはなしです。
　私たちが今住んでいる場所は、もともと草木が生い茂り様々な生き物が生きていたところを、人間が住みやすいように無理やり作り変え、人の増加と共に他の生き物の居場所を奪ってできたものです。空き家とは言っても、それはただ人間が住まなくなったというだけのはなしで、人の気配が薄れていくにつれて、今度は人間に居場所を奪われた他の生き物たちが家の中に小さなすみかを作り、生態系を取り戻していきます。そこは人間の住む街の中に生じた異世界です。だからこそ人間都合の視点で見ている限りそれらは不快なもの・おぞましいものとしてしか感じられないかもしれません。ですが、沈没船が魚にとってちょうどいい住処となって楽園ができあがるように、空き家が人間以外の生き物のすみかとなり、楽園となっても良いのではないでしょうか。私たち人間が奪ってきた土地を、そろそろ他の生き物たちが住めるようにしてもいいのではないでしょうか。隣に空き家があると、そこで虫が大量に繁殖して自分の家にまでやってくるのではないかと不安に思う人もいるかもしれません。しかし、何かが大量に発生するのは、生態系が崩れて天敵がいなくなったときです。むしろ空き家に色々な生き物が住み着き、ちゃんとした生態系が空き家を中心にしてできあがれば、特定の生き物の大繁殖はかえって抑えられます。人間の身勝手によって作られた世界は調和のとれていない歪な世界です。空き家はその歪な世界の中に小さな調和を生み出す余地でもあるのです。
　私はアートが持つ力の一つに、受け入れがたいものを受け入れやすくするという効果があると思っています。私自身、よく自分の嫌いなものや苦手なものをモチーフにして作品を作るのですが、作品を作るために抵抗感のあるものをよく観察して、それらがどのように存在しているのか、自分がそれらのどの部分に対して抵抗感を抱いているのか、なぜ嫌っているのか、どこが醜くてどこが美しいのか、相手の視点からは世界がどう映っているのかなど、様々な角度から見つめる内に捉え方や考え方、接し方が変わっていくのです。そうして得た気づきを表現に結びつけることで、鑑賞する人にも新たな視点を提示できるのではないかと私は考えています。
　今回鹿野芸術祭02に展示させていただいたこの作品では「朽ちゆく様の美しさ」というテーマと、「空き家の中のすみか」というイメージを元に制作を進めました。「朽ちゆく様の美しさ」を表したのが入り口正面の奥にある雨漏りのインスタレーションになります。今回使用させていただいた空き家は木造に土壁という伝統的な日本家屋です。最近の合成物質だらけの家と違い、それなりに時間はかかるものの、最終的には瓦以外ほぼ全てが土に還ります。そのように土に還る過程で重要な役割を果たすのが雨漏りです。乾燥している木は丈夫で分解が難しく、中々朽ちません。それが雨漏りによって濡れることで柔らかくなり、虫や菌糸が食べやすくなることで分解が進んでいきます。雨漏りは家が自然へと戻っていく循環の始まりの象徴なのです。
　土間の横にある部屋には生き物の巣などを用いたインスタレーションを展示し、家の中に様々な生き物が住み着いて生態系が生まれる様子を表現しました。実際の生態系を忠実に再現したわけではありませんが、この作品を通して虫や植物など色々な生き物がここに小さな生態系を築いていき、家が徐々に朽ちていく様子に思いを馳せて、少しでもそこに美しさや慈しみを見出していただけたら幸いです。

Today, Japan has a vacant house problem that caused by aging society like as other advanced countries. But it is more serious problem than others because of damage from natural environment to house.
Earthquake, Tsunami and typhoon, Japan has many disaster as you know. But if Japan has no disasters even though Japanese house cannot keep standing over 30 years without human hand. The humidity and acidic soil decays the foundations of the house. Especially Japanese wooden house decays fast.
In the future, population decreases and abandoned house increases more and more. Recently Japanese government makes new law for abandoned house problem but it is not enough response. Still many abandoned house exists and almost all of those cannot use or break down. Most of neighbors feel negative about it. But I don’t think it is completely negative. Of course abandoned house have many risks and we should break it down immediately if it is too dangerous. But it is selfishness of human being. There were many lives before people make the houses. People killing many lives to live there. We should return the space for other living things when we are decrease. If the house is decaying, it means other lives are living and eating there. Vacant house can be shelter for other lives like as sunken ship for fishes. The human society is an unbalanced ecosystem. I would like to welcome it when the vacant house include the small ecosystem. It bring a tiny harmony in our society.
I made this installation art work by the image of “nests in the vacant house” and the theme is “beauty of decaying”. The most part of expressing the “beauty of decaying” is the rain leaking installation at the front of entrance. This house was already having the rain leaking when I coming to preliminary inspection. Rain leaking is a symbol of decaying especially for like this old style Japanese wooden house. When the wooden house return to the soil, rain leaking is working as most important part of decaying. Dried wood is too hard to eat for insects and fungi but rain leaking make good conditions to them.
I install the insect’s nest, shell, fungi, moss and plants at the rooms next to the entrance to direct small ecosystem in the house. It is not exactly same as real natural ecosystem because usually real lives are hiding from human and them hostage. I direct it to visible and easily to image how lives living in abandoned house for spectators. When you step in the abandoned house, lets looking for the hiding lives. They are living as our neighbors.
